Cataract FAQs

Denver, Boulder - Colorado

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a cloudy formation that develops in or on the eye's natural lens. The lens is the part of the eye that focuses light, allowing objects at different distances to come into focus. The lens within the eye is made up primarily of water. As the body ages, changes occur that cause the eye's lens to darken and harden. Cataracts are the cloudiness that occurs in the lens that can severely inhibit vision and change one's color perception.

How are cataracts treated?

There is only one solution for serious cataracts that are inhibiting vision, and that is cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, a tiny incision is made in the eye and the eye's lens is removed. After the natural lens is removed, an Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) is implanted in its place. The IOL is made of a soft plastic, and once it is implanted, cataracts will no longer affect vision. Dr. Lewis and the cataract surgery team at Cherry Creek Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. use a variety o lenses including the Tecnis, ReSTOR, or Crystalens IOLs for your cataract surgery.

Dr. Lewis and his staff were extremely competent, knowledgeable, and efficient. With my eyesight now at 20/10, I can enjoy all of my favorite outdoor activities without the hassle of glasses. I recommend him highly to everyone I know!

Is it essential to remove a cataract as soon as it forms?

No. Many times, when a cataract is discovered, action is not immediately taken. In fact many people choose to not undergo cataract surgery unless the cataract progresses and begins to interfere with everyday tasks and activities. With new IOL technology, no one should be forced to change the way they live simply because they have cataracts. Contact Dr Lewis if you think you may need cataract surgery.

Why do cataracts form?

Cataracts form as a result of the eye's natural lens changing as the aging process occurs. While doctors are unsure why the lens changes this way, the change causes the collogen within the lens to clump together, interfering with vision because it prevent light from entering the eye correctly.

How long is the healing process after cataract surgery?

Since cataract surgery is minimally invasive, there are no sutures used to close the tiny incision. The incision closes on its own. The healing process after the cataract surgery has been performed is short. After the cataract surgery, it will take about a day before activities like reading or watching TV can be resumed, and about a week before all normal activities can be resumed.
